Nymfes

Nymfes, which means Nymphes in Greek, is café located on Akrotiri hill and is about a 20-minute drive from downtown Chania. Nymfes is a local favorite and, for that reason, attracts crowds on Sunday afternoons.

Reason to Go

People go to Nymfes for two reasons: the amazing view and the delicious sweets. From the café’s balcony you get a stunning panoramic view of Chania and the Cretan sea. The sweets are tasty and the portions are so huge that last time I visited, we had to ask them to take away what we didn’t manage to eat. When I say huge, I mean that if you order one piece of chocolate cake, the portion is more than enough for 3 people, if not for 4! It’s definitely a value-for-money place!

Myself, I’ve got a personal history with Nymfes as I waitressed there when I was teenager. I find that my ex-boss, the owner, Michalis, is a really warm-hearted guy! When I was there I worked day shifts which were usually less crowded. At some point, I thought it would be a good idea for the café, and myself, to change its music, so one day I played one of my CDs. When Michalis realized that the music was not his resident DJ’s playlist, he almost had a heart attack! Every time I recall this story, I burst into laughs! I still believe it was a good idea and that my playlist was better!
