Nicolas Tavern

Chania

Nicolas Tavern

Nicolas is a fish taverna in Nea Chora, a neighbourhood about a 5-minute drive from downtown Chania. I usually visit by car, but if you don’t have one, it’s a 20-minute walk from downtown Chania.

Reason to Go

The main reason to visit is the food! Nicolas offers fish, a variety of seafood, as well as many traditional Cretan dishes. Its customers are mostly loyal clientele, Chania locals, who keep coming back because of the quality food and service. The portions are large and some dishes you should definitely try are the mussels, grilled sardines and grilled calamari. You also shouldn’t miss the french fries, which are homemade and so tasty.

Another traditional Greek dish that Nicolas serves, is the “greens” which are different types of boiled greens served with virgin olive oil, some lemon and salt. This dish is as healthy as it gets! Ask if they have urchin salad, which is delicious and you won’t get the chance to try it in many other places. The cost per person, depending on what you order, can be around €20-25. Even though you can find restaurants in Chania where you can dine for a couple of euros less, you won’t regret eating at Nickolas as it’s totally value for money.
