Stavros & Stamatis Tavern

Stavros & Stamatis is a small “mageireio” (traditional cooked foods restaurant) located inside the Municipal Market of Chania. Mageirio-type restaurants cook a number of different, traditional Greek dishes every day; the kind of food Greeks cook in their homes. In the old days, it was common for people to visit the mageirio of their neighborhood and have lunch at an affordable price. At Stavros & Stamatis, as well as in other mageiria, the dishes of the day are displayed in a window, so you can choose what you’re going to eat after seeing all of your options!

It can’t get more authentic and original than this! Stavros & Stamatis actually operates like mageiria did in the past: it prepares fresh, homestyle meals daily and is frequented by locals. You’ll notice that the owners know almost every patron, many of whom work in the municipal market or close by. In Stavros & Stamatis, you sometimes also run into weirder traditional Cretan dishes, ones you won’t easily find in other restaurants. For example, they often serve Kelidakia, which are lamb or goat intestines in lemon sauce.

If the thought of eating intestines intimidates you, don’t worry. There’s always plenty of dishes of the day, and if you don’t fancy any of those you can always order a delicious grilled steak! During winter, one of the daily dishes is always a soup. Throughout the year, most main dishes can also be ordered as half portions in case you’d prefer to taste many different things. As you might have guessed, you get a lot of value for money at Stavros & Stamatis. Along with wine, the cost per person doesn’t usually exceed €10-12 per person. Attention: the restaurant is only open until the afternoon, so you can’t go there for dinner! It’s a place to have lunch.
