Afrikana Jazz Bar
Afrikana is a jazz bar in the Gazi area, with a stage that throws live concerts almost every day.
Reason to Go
At Afrikana you can listen to nice, live bands at a reasonable cost. Usually, there is no entrance fee and the bands are paid with some added cost on your first drink. It is usually not a lot (€3 euros, for example) and the amount depends on the band. They often also organise jam sessions, usually during weekdays. The architecture of the place is nice as it has high ceilings and, for some reason, it makes me feel that I am outside of Athens, on a Greek island far away. The decoration is lovely and the place is cozy.
Highs & Lows
Listen to live music — primarily jazz or funk — while enjoying a drink at an affordable price.
One of Gazi’s best spots. In my opinion, Gazi is an area, which for my taste, is rather noisy.
When the concert is over people usually leave early. I’m mentioning this because it’s a bar and not a concert hall, where this is more typical.
Crowd and Style
The crowd varies depending on the band that’s playing. I would say that you will mainly find crowds in their 35-40s and not so mainstream, which in this particular case, would mean more on the Miles Davis end of the spectrum rather than the Katy Perry one. Chances are you will not meet many Katy Perry fans there. No offense to Katy Perry, I really love “Hot & Cold” – both the song and the video! Also many of the people you will find there will be supporters and friends of the bands playing, which, in my opinion, creates a nice, friendly atmosphere.
Distance
In Gazi - 25 min walk from Syntagma (if you take a shortcut).
