Pyrofani Fish

Pyrofani is a fish taverna located on a beach on Souda Bay, overlooking the port of Souda. It’s a 20-minute drive from downtown Chania and it’s a favorite choice for families as it’s quite spacious and also has a small playground. 

Reason to go

The main reason to visit Pyrofani is its value-for-money, high-quality food. It’s popular amongst locals and since it’s not downtown, Pyrofani tries to attract and retain a loyal clientele. If you’re interested in eating fish, ask the staff about the catch of the day, and its price per kilo. Once you choose, the waitstaff will take you to the kitchen where they’ll weigh the fish you selected in front of you, so you’re aware of the price. You should aim for about 250 grams per person, but you can also choose less than that and order more side dishes. They usually grill the fish and the result is absolutely delicious.

If you don’t like fish or if you’d like to keep the cost low, you could also just order a lot of starters and seafood, like calamari or mussels. The second reason to visit Pyrofani is the amazing location. It’s built on a beach and if you visit in the afternoon, you’ll witness a beautiful sunset. Finally, for families with small kids, the restaurant has a big yard, a small playground and, of course, the beach to keep the little ones occupied. It’s a restaurant where tourists are rare. Also, as it’s a spacious restaurant, it may feel empty if you arrive early, before many other people. If you prefer eating with more of a crowd, you should go as late as 22.00, as Greeks eat dinner quite late.
