Souvlaki O Kostas is, as you might have guessed from the name, a souvlaki restaurant. The souvlaki they offer, in my opinion, is the best in Athens. It contains yogurt, meat (pork stick or beef meatball), tomato and parsley and the resulting combination is delicious!
Reason to go
I go to Kostas for the tasty souvlaki! The location is also convenient, as it is very close to Syntagma Square. One souvlaki costs €2 and, if you want to get full, you should probably order two.
In the picture, Kostas is taking care of the grill. He runs the place with his wife and one thing that I always found strange is that they open at 8.00 a.m. and close at 15.30 p.m., odd hours for a souvlaki shop. Even though the place is always packed and they have a lot of orders, they have decided to satisfy as many customers as they can by themselves, even if that means operating for limited hours. This way, they can keep control over the quality of their menu items.
The sign reads “no stress”. Another interesting fact is that Kostas follows the family tradition and makes the souvlaki in the same way his grandfather (also named Kostas) did at his souvlaki place in Plaka in the 1950s.
Highs & Lows
The tastiest souvlaki in Athens. Made with love and following a family tradition.
Very close to Syntagma Square.
Good price — €2 per wrapped (in a pita) souvlaki and, I don’t know about other people, but for me, two wrapped souvlakia are enough to make me full!
It’s a very popular place, so there might be a queue. To avoid a wait, you can also place an order by phone.
Closes at 15.30 p.m. and, last time I checked, they prepared only phone orders from 14.00 p.m.
It’s street food and if you want to sit there are only a few stools inside and a bench outside.
Tip
The place is very busy and there is only one person – Kostas – making all the souvlaki to order. My tip is to pre-order either by phone or in the store and come back to pick up your souvlaki when your order is ready. The phone number is +30 210 3228502. If you cannot call, then you can drop by (before 14.00), place your order, have a walk around and then come back to take it. Otherwise, just go early enough, before locals emerge for lunchtime!

Crowd and Style
Practically everyone, but that’s kind of irrelevant because it’s primarily a takeaway place.
My name is Lina, I love travelling and when I visit a new place I want to experience it as a local would. I live in Athens but I’m originally from Chania, Crete which I visit throughout the year.
