Embros Theater Events
Embros Theater is a theater hall located in the Psiri neighbourhood that became occupied by a group of young people in 2011 and has operated as a cultural hub ever since. Its name means “front” and its building dates back to the 1930s. Previously, Embros Theater worked as a regular theater but due to the economic crisis, it remained closed for five consecutive years (2006-2011). For this reason, a group of artists (Movement Mavili), along with the support of the residents, took possession of the space and re-opened it in its current form.
Reason to go
Embros operates as a cultural hub. It hosts plays, dance performances, concerts, stand-up-comedy shows, photography exhibitions, workshops, parties and more. As it’s a community-run, non-profit organization, there’s never an admission fee to any of these shows, but there’s an open hat where spectators can pay a donation. There’s a small bar that sells beers, wine and a few other drinks. The bar also operated on an open-hat policy (you paid as much as you could for a beer, for example), but today there’s a low fixed price, €2 per beer. Embros is quite alternative.
What I find really impressive is the way Embros is managed, by “an open assembly”. This open assembly holds meetings every now and then, where the members collectively decide which events and artists they will host. The most interesting part is that for a decision to be reached, the members of the assembly must agree unanimously. Strangely enough, in today’s world where opinions are so divergent, the assembly has operated smoothly in this way for many years now.
Below is the calendar with some of the events planned for 2019:
