Blue Bird is a cozy bar close to Syntagma, on a pedestrian street/square called Ipitou. It was the first bar that opened in an area that is now full of them. We have frequented it ever since it opened as a good friend of mine is friends with the owner.
Reason to Go
The music and the DJs are usually good. The atmosphere is cozy as the space inside is small and outdoors, under a blue awning, there are a few tables arranged around heating lamps (in case you visit during the winter). When the weather is good and on busy days you can take advantage of the pedestrian street, grab a drink and hang out outside. People go to Blue Bird either to have an early drink and chat with friends, or to enjoy a late drink and listen to interesting tunes.
Highs & Lows
The pedestrian street has a Greek island holiday-feel, especially during warm spring or summer evenings. You will still be in the center but will be spared the traffic noise.
The music - usually there is a DJ playing.
Original place created with love.
Smoking is not allowed inside - one of the few bars in Athens to enforce this rule.
If it is a busy day, you will probably not find a table easily but you can always hang out on the pedestrian street.
Feels like
During winter…
During summer… 😉
Crowd and Style
Young people in their 20s – 40s, young professionals, small groups of friends, bigger groups of friends hanging out on the pedestrian street. Usually, you encounter rather stylish, cool people. I would also say the place is gay-friendly.
My name is Lina, I love travelling and when I visit a new place I want to experience it as a local would. I live in Athens but I’m originally from Chania, Crete which I visit throughout the year.
