Chania Guide

The Chania region is best explored by car. You can visit secluded beaches, join traditional feasts in remote villages and eat at local tavernas with amazing traditional Cretan food. The food culture is very strong in Chania and many restaurants maintain a loyal local clientele (with a population that numbers 80.000 inhabitants, restaurants have many demanding customers to impress year-round). Often, restaurants that are located just outside Chania achieve such a loyal following by offering something extra, i.e. better food quality, better prices or a combination.

Below you’ll find my selections for the best places to eat (restaurants and tavernas) in the Chania suburbs. I am not getting any sort of compensation for listing them, they are just places I like and visit regularly. I group the recommendations by food experience (lunch, dinner) and, wherever possible, I also suggest other activities or excursions you could combine with these restaurants.

Thalassino Ageri

Thalassino Ageri is a fish taverna that is a classic choice for both locals and tourists. The location of the restaurant is so atmospheric and its tables are literally next to the sea.

Argentina Fish Restaurant

Argentina is a fish restaurant that’s located in a seaside village called Kolymbari which offers fresh fish and seafood at very good prices.
