Friends visiting from abroad often ask me if there are areas or beaches near Athens worth visiting. Below I’ve shared what I believe to be the top things to do and places to visit in the outskirts of Athens, which I call Be Merry Suburbs. You’ll find the best beaches close to Athens, picturesque neighborhoods to walk in (like the Piraeus coast and Mikrolimano), and short excursions like Vouliagmeni Lake (an ideal place to swim if you’re visiting Athens during autumn or winter). I also include the Niarchos and Onassis Foundations, two famous cultural centers located in the suburbs which often organize music concerts, art exhibitions and other events really worth visiting.
